The road lies in two states, mainly the River Nile State and the Red Sea State, linking Atbara and Port Sudan through Haiya, totalling 487 km. The road consisted of two parts; the first Lot is the Atbara-Haiya link which is about 278 km, implemented and opened for operation by 2007, while the second lot is Haiya- the Port Sudan link, about 209 km and forming part of the existing asphalt road which extends from Khartoum to Kassala, Haiya, and Port Sudan (about 1200 km in length) and this part operated since the early seventeen’s of the last century. The selected design speed for this road was 100km/hr. At the same time, the posted speed for most sections is also 100 km/hr.The overall objective of this study components is to contribute positively to reducing and preventing the risk of accidents occurring on the national roadway Atbra – Haiya – Port Sudan and minimise their severity. While the detailed objectives include - To define and suggest the appropriate countermeasures addressing the worst accident types and locations on the mentioned roadway section. - To help enhance the understanding of traffic safety situation in the national road network. - To recognise the importance of safety in highway planning and design stages- To help in reducing the long-term costs of roadway design and improvements

The West Kordofan State is not connected to the national power grid. As such, the functionality of public sector services and the development of private businesses are severely affected by the lack of clean, reliable power. Therefore, the state has decided to electrify public sector service institutions and the residence of key government officials to maintain the state service functionally to an adequate level that meets the need of the population and foster development in the state.

This project aims to review, examine and revise the existing road design to ensure that it meets the higher standards in terms of both geometric and structural parameters that satisfy the safety and quality requirements. On the other hand, the project work also includes monitoring and supervising the road construction work activities and treating them promptly to meet the contractor implementation time schedules.

The road lies in South Darfur state, linking between Nyala and Buram through Gerida with a length of 136 km; the contracted civil works include construction of the road. The work consists of clearing and grubbing, embankment construction, sub-base, base layers, asphalt later, shoulder filling, box culverts, pipe culverts and Road furniture. The overall development objectives of road construction in South Darfur State are to facilitate the country's economic and social recovery through improved physical access to goods, markets, and administrative and social services, a key impediment to recovery and development.

The state road department in Khartoum utilises traffic count data to determine the levels of vehicle trips the roads are carrying, the types of vehicles, and the choices they make at intersections. This information is fundamental to network-level planning, the most significant for roadway and intersection planning and analysis. The count data will allow the State Road Department to make more informed decisions about road planning and design and help inform policymakers concerning funding levels for road maintenance, road safety, and new road construction. The Khartoum road network consists primarily of major intersections in roundabouts (dual and single lane), signalised intersections, and unsignalized intersections. Roadway lane configurations include 6-lane divided, 6-lane undivided, 4-lane divided, 4-lane undivided, 3-lane and 2-lane undivided.
